Shaker Heights Rowing is a varsity, school-sponsored and supported team at Shaker Heights High School - one of very few public school varsity programs in the country. The school supports the team with funding towards coaching stipends, insurance, boathouse fees, regatta entries, uniforms, transportation to and from practice and regattas all year, and more. The school also contributes to the team’s capital needs with rowing and safety equipment.

Like almost all rowing teams, however, the costs to operate a team exceed what the school can provide; the parent booster group is 501(c)3 which exists to help organize activities and supplement that cost with dues collected from families and fundraising. The Registration Fee goes towards supplementing almost all the expenses above, as well as paying for hotel and food while traveling for competitions. Families may also be responsible for gear and uniform costs, separate from the registration fees. We strive to keep costs as low as possible and offer financial aid (see more info below).

The participation fees are assessed separately for the fall and spring seasons and will vary from season to season based on regatta schedules and the number of athletes. As a very broad estimate, the total cost is generally $700-850 per season. All fees can be paid in installments. Specific information about each season will be given out once an athlete is on the team.

Invoices for all fees will be emailed to each family by the Treasurer, typically in the first month of each season. Families have the option of paying each invoice in monthly installments.

If paying by check, make payable to Shaker Heights HS Crew Parents, Inc. mail to:

Financial Assistance

We want every student-athlete interested in crew to have the opportunity to compete. Your athlete may be eligible for financial assistance through the Shaker Crew Parents, Inc.

There are also external grants and scholarships you can apply for on your own:

  • Shaker Schools Foundation's Level the Playing Field scholarships provide funds toward fall registration fees (these scholarships are not available for spring fees).

The following are national grant-making organizations that may provide a grant to use towards fees. Eligibility and application timelines vary, but we encourage families to explore these options for funding. Please note: Shaker Crew Parents, Inc. is not affiliated with any of these organizations; the information below is provided as a resource for families.

  • All Kids Play provides grants to cover up to $350 per session for eligible applicants.

  • Every Kid Sports Pass provides scholarships of up to $150 for children enrolled in Medicaid, SNAP or WIC.

  • Movemeant Foundation provides grants of $1,000 for female athletes from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

  • Lindsey Vonn Foundation provides scholarships of up to $5,000 for female athletes from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

If cost is a barrier, we are committed to working with you to alleviate the financial burden. We will do everything we can to make SHHS Crew accessible to everyone who wants to row. If families have questions or concerns about payments, they are encouraged to contact the Coach or the Treasurer.
